All-Welded Honeycomb

To meet the constantly growing demand for specialized materials designed to meet complex design requirements, ASTECH has developed an entire family of products to meet critical structural and performance requirements such as high temperatures, strength-to-weight optimization, structural dynamics, sonic load, sound attenuation, and heat transfer. One of ASTECH’s proven proprietary materials is an all-welded honeycomb sandwich. The advantage of honeycomb for many different applications of aerospace structure is well established, as evidenced by its widespread usage. Honeycomb provides excellent structural efficiency, a high strength-to-weight ratio, and maximum resistance to dynamic environments.

While conventional honeycomb is fabricated by adhesive bonding or brazing the honeycomb core to the facing skins, the high reliability of our honeycomb is achieved by ribbon-by-ribbon installation and automatic welding. The lack of bonding agents reduces weight, eliminates contamination and corrosion, and permits temperature exposure to the limits of the material itself.

This method of construction grants our product a substantially superior strength-to-weight ratio. This advantage over other honeycomb structures increases with temperature. It can be manufactured from any weldable material, in any length, up to 48” in width, in a variety of cell sizes, face sheet and foil thicknesses. It is extremely heat resistant, effectively maintaining the properties of its parent material at its maximum operating temperature. All-welded honeycomb is extremely resistant to thermal shock and sonic fatigue. It is not subject to galvanic corrosion. It is easily repaired in the field using standard sheetmetal techniques.

What is Sound Attenuation?

The FAA regulates strict noise requirements for aircraft in order to be flight approved. ASTECH’s Sound Attenuated Panels help aircraft lower the noise levels of their engine exhaust systems to meet these requirements.

Sound Absorbing

  • One perforated face sheet

  • Panel Depth tuned to frequency of noise

Maintains Structural Integrity

  • Maintains the strength, rigidity, heat resistance, etc. of standard honeycomb panel
